Visiting Elective Scholars Program

We believe in the importance of diversity and inclusion in medicine and medical education. We created this scholarship to encourage and promote fourth year medical students from underrepresented backgrounds to rotate at the department of pediatrics in the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville located in Jacksonville, Florida. There are 3 options available:

  • 4-week NICU at UF Health Jacksonville
  • 4-week Inpatient at Wolfson Children’s Hospital
  • Hybrid: 2 weeks NICU and 2 weeks Inpatient

How can I apply?

Please submit the following via email to Ashley Volz (ashley.volz@jax.ufl.edu)

  • Letter of intent explaining “Why do I want to train in pediatrics?” and “Why do I qualify for this scholarship?” (1 page maximum)
  • Resume or CV
  • Letter of support from medical school faculty member
  • Step 1 or COMLEX 1 completion
  • Unofficial transcript

Who can apply?

  • Currently enrolled full-time 3rd year medical students applying to 4th year electives in pediatrics
  • Good academic standing at a U.S. accredited medical school
  • Individuals belonging to a group considered underrepresented in medicine (Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian, and LGBTQ+)
  • U.S. Citizens or permanent residents

How are the scholarship recipients selected?

The scholarship recipients will be selected by a committee of pediatric faculty and residents based on submission of a completed application packet including letter of intent, CV, and letter of recommendation by the stated due date.

What is the deadline to apply?

2022-2023 Application Cycle: August 1, 2023

All students are also required to apply for a rotational experience through VSAS (opens April 1st)!

What are the details of the scholarship?

Scholarship-based elective rotation details include:

  • $2500 reimbursement for travel to and from Jacksonville and lodging
  • Meal card provided: $62/week total
  • Meeting with the Program Director
  • Meeting with additional program leadership
  • Opportunity to interact closely with our residents and experience the culture of our program
  • Students will attend all program didactics
  • Students will be offered an interview
